Former Siri chief is leaving Apple to join Microsoft’s AI division

Bill Stasior, the former head of Apple’s Siri division, is leaving the company after nearly 1a decade to join Microsoft’s artificial intelligence division, reports The Information. Although Stasior left Apple in May, he’s only joining Microsoft later this month as a corporate vice president, reporting to Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott. Stassior worked at Apple for more than seven years, joining back in 2012.

Stasior’s departure seems less an indictment of the current state of Siri and more a reflection of the reality of AI at Apple. Last year, the iPhone maker poached John Giannandrea from Google, where he was a former head of search and AI. That’s reshaped the way Apple works on AI.

Facebook’s antitrust investigation could finish as soon as next year

Facebook’s looming antitrust fight could come as soon as next year, according to statements by FTC Chairman Joe Simons reported by the Financial Times. Simons told FT that he sees the 2020 elections as a looming deadline for the probe, and would seek to make any finding before November 2020 as a result.

“Any significant case that I’m trying to emphasize,” Simons said, “I would want to be out before the election.”

The chairman gave few hints as to what that eventual finding might be, but said the increasing entanglement of Facebook with sister products like Instagram and WhatsApp would make it difficult to execute a traditional antitrust breakup.

Reddit launches five-day live-streaming test

Reddit is testing out something that, if successful, could help it take on platforms like Twitch and YouTube — live-streaming. The company today announced its first broadcasting tool, which it’s calling the “Reddit Public Access Network.” The software will let eligible users live-stream to a new subreddit called r/pan.

Users who want to tune into broadcasts can do so directly from the subreddit, but top streams will appear on Reddit’s front page throughout the testing period, according to a blog post. Users will also be able to vote on their favorite stream, similar to Reddit’s upvote system, which will dictate what appears on the homepage.

Death Stranding, Gears 5, and Destiny 2: the best trailers of Gamescom 2019

It’s Gamescom, which means a slew of video game news is coming out of Germany this week. Already, we’ve learned that Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to Google Stadia, PUBG is getting cross-play support on console, and another big wave of indie games is on the way to the Nintendo Switch. Outside of those announcements, big game shows are also good for another thing: trailers. And so far, Gamescom has not disappointed.

Moon delivery startup Astrobotic picks future Vulcan rocket to launch first lunar mission

US aerospace startup Astrobotic — a company that wants to establish a delivery service to the Moon — says it will fly its very first lunar mission on top of the United Launch Alliance’s future rocket, named Vulcan. In fact, Astrobotic’s spacecraft, a lunar lander named Peregrine, will be Vulcan’s very first payload ever, scheduled for launch sometime in 2021. If everything stays on track, the mission could send the first private vehicle to the surface of the Moon.

Astrobotic is one of many companies with its sights set on the lunar surface. The company, based out of Pittsburgh, says its goal is to build vehicles that can ferry instruments and payloads to the Moon for research organizations, space agencies, companies, and more. “Our goal…

The world’s on fire, and Aston Martin wants to build ‘lairs’ for cars

July was the hottest month on record. Here’s some good news for rich people, though: if your home is in danger of flooding from sea level rise, Aston Martin is now in the business of building lairs for cars.

Yes, one of the first news items to break out of the auto industry’s biggest annual celebration of rare and fancy cars money, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, is that Aston Martin is starting a service called “Aston Martin Automotive Galleries and Lairs.” The service is, in Aston Martin’s words, “for anyone who would like to create a unique bespoke garage — their own ‘Automotive Gallery’ – or for the truly adventurous the ultimate retreat or ‘Automotive Lair’ in which to keep their car.”
