Nintendo president: ‘we must keep up’ with cloud gaming tech

In some ways, the Nintendo Switch can already provide one of the biggest benefits of cloud gaming: the ability to sling a game from a big TV to a portable device and carry it anywhere you go. But Nintendo isn’t pretending that capability is enough to weather what could be a sea change in how games are developed, played and sold.

When Nintendo executives were asked at this year’s annual meeting of shareholders what they thought of cloud gaming — the idea that video games can be streamed from remote internet servers rather than run on a local console — they admitted they not only believe the technology will be part of the future, but that Nintendo “must keep up” as well.

Here’s the whole quote from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, as…

AMD cuts Radeon 5700 GPU prices just two days before their release

When AMD announced its next-gen Navi-based Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT graphics cards last month, the news was just slightly underwhelming because the prices didn’t necessarily make them the obvious alternative to Nvidia’s rival chips.

But just two days before their July 7th launch date, AMD has taken the drastic step of dropping the prices on these new GPUs.

The Radeon 5700 XT, previously listed at $450, will now cost $400, and the Radeon 5700, previously $380, will be priced at $350. (There’s also a $500 Radeon RX 5700 XT 50th Anniversary Edition that’ll retail for $450.)

It’s not clear what this means for customers who already preordered the cards, and it’s also not clear whether this will be enough to head off Nvidia. Earlier this…

LA’s earthquake warning system worked — just not how people expected

After a recent earthquake in Los Angeles, some residents were left wondering why their ShakeAlert LA app hadn’t notified them. The system was working exactly as it was designed to, as the Los Angeles Times reported in the aftermath of the quake. While the shaking was intense in Ridgecrest, it wasn’t strong enough in LA to trigger the app to alert the people in Los Angeles County.

But the surprise may help ShakeAlert’s makers design a system for the West Coast that’s more responsive to what people actually want from an earthquake app. The designers had assumed that…

The US Army has released its first audiobooks

The US Army wants its soldiers to begin listening to its training materials, which, surprisingly, has never been an option before. In recent weeks, the Training and Doctrine Command’s Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate (CADD) has released audiobook versions of a pair of training manuals for the first time as part of an experiment to see if it’s an effective medium to spread information to soldiers across the force.

It’s part of a wider effort to overhaul and modernize how the Army conceptualizes and trains its forces and, in doing so, catch up to what a large segment of the publishing industry has already realized: audiobooks are increasingly popular.

CADD has a particularly important role within the Army: it’s responsible for…
